Slow Food Market Stellenbosch

Filed under: Uncategorized — urbangrat at 2:00 am on Monday, December 14, 2009

So on Saturday 12 December, The Urban Gratification team were chilling in the summer sun surrounded by deliciously fresh food and awesome smoothies. The Stellenbosch Market is definitely one of the better markets around, We made a few sales and spent alot of time informing the public about what we are trying to achieve. The main objective being to stop organic waste going to landfill which as you should know is a major issue in our country. We have to understand the food we eat draws it’s nutrients from the ground, when we throw away (away where ?) food waste the nutrients are not returned to the soil resulting in poor quality agricultural soils. ( Sorry end of rant)We will be at the market next week Saturday  the 19th again so if you in the area stop in and say hello !For Directions to the Stellenbosch Slow Food Market click here

Bokashi Composting? What’s that?

Bokashi Composting? What’s that?

Bokashi is a centuries-old Japanese method of recycling household food waste into all-natural compost.  By employing a special culture of yeast and other microorganisms, bokashi is a compact, odourless process that takes only days instead of weeks or months.Conventional composting uses oxygen-fed organisms to break down organic matter.  In contrast, bokashi uses a special mix of organisms that thrive without oxygen to ferment the food scraps.  The process is similar to that of wine or pickle making.  It takes place in a sealed container and it’s practically odourless, making it suitable for small dwellings.

Fermentation and Bokashi

Conventional composting relies on oxygen-fed organisms to break down organic material.  Bokashi uses different kinds of microbes that thrive without oxygen.  They decompose organic matter through an anaerobic process.  It’s basic fermentation, the same process that gives us wine and pickles.

Advantages of Bokashi Compost

Bokashi works fast - in a matter of days, not months.  And, when properly managed, bokashi is practically odourless.  That makes it ideal for apartments and large residential dwellings alike.Bokashi is also highly scalable.  Larger buckets can be fitted with wheels to ease transportation logistics.  For restaurants or schoolsprisons and other institutions, bokashi has potential as a speedier, more space-efficient way to recycle large volumes of kitchen waste into valuable compost.

How to Do Bokashi Compost

Making bokashi compost is simple.  You need a couple of big containers with tight-fitting lids (to keep the oxygen out), some kitchen scraps, and Eco Organics Bokashi.  Eco Organics Bokashi contains wheat bran, molasses, and SCD Food-grade Probiotics (EM or Efficient Microbes) - the efficient microorganisms that drive the process.Note that because we use food-grade Probiotics / EM, it is perfectly save as a additive (2%-4%) in your pet’s food.  Assist in general health, better digestion, and dog poop that does not smell as strong as the pro-biotic will suppress pathogens and inoculate ammonia  and methane gases.  Thus it will also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

  • Hi all, I have recently started a Business based on the principles of Nature. Urban Gratification specializes in organic waste management and urban food production. We are committed to sustainable community empowerment. Something to think about: if everything that is and ever was comes from nature why should we pay money for it ?
